It's true that the application needs will firstly result in
a 'control system data access' API on the client side.
What's wrong with that?
Based on it, four things can happen in parallel:
- we can find a better name for the 'EPICS Office' application suite
EPICS Desktop
Open EPICS
EPICS++
EPICS Ware
EPICS Objects
Hi Steve:
Wasn't aware that you've subscribed to core-talk.
Will have to be more careful ;-)
"EPICS office" limits ourselves to word processing
and spreadsheets based on EPICS data.
I think we'd like to get where Gumtree is now and further.
See http://gumtree.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
It calls itself something like a "framework for running scientific
experiments" and treats EPICS as one middleware plugin.
It's not competing with EPICS, TANGO, ... but benefitting from it.
Likewise, we could try to build a "Control System Application Suite".
It will hopefully eventually offer best performance and most
features when talking to EPICS V4 IOCs, but nonetheless can be used
with V3 IOCs as well as TANGO or Tine data servers.
I'm now hearing "We have to build this accelerator, we don't need V4,
especially if the V4 IOCs are incompatible with V3".
I'd like to hear "These new applications are great, can we please finish
V4 and convert at least these IOCs to it?"
