EPICS and the SDDS Toolkit

APS's Operations Analysis Group (OAG) writes high-level software for operating the APS accelerator complex. Among the most important components of this software are the SDDS Toolkits. These are open source, commandline tools that use a common self-describing file format to perform EPICS data acquisition and process control, as well as data processing, manipulation, and display.

This lecture introduces the concepts behind SDDS and describes some of the advantages of both self-describing files and the SDDS implementation. It then gives details on a number of the SDDS Toolkit programs that are useful for both developers and those who wish to collect and analyze EPICS data on the fly. Attendees should be comfortable with script writing and the UNIX commandline.
