Hi Ned,
Have you looked into the Foundation Fieldbus? The Foundation Fieldbus
is the result of a merger between the Interoperability Systems Project
ISP and WorldFIP. It's a very new standard in the US and is in the
process of being standardized worldwide(?) as the ISA/IEC SP50 specification.

commercial support
Several companies have commercial developers packages
available but commercial availability of remote IO is
not expected until later this year.
