As Ben has already pointed out, that functionality is implemented by 
ca_put_callback(), not the ca_sg functions.  Looking at it I can see 
that the CA documentation doesn't really explain the rationale for sync 
groups or emphasize the fundamental difference between ca_put() and 
ca_put_callback() very well (and ca_put_callback() isn't even listed in 
the function index).  I've filed a bug report to ask Jeff to improve 
these aspects of the documentation.
