I've known Marty since I joined APS, some 10 years ago. His dedication to epics and love for programming was truly inspiring. We spent many hours working together trying to debug issues or improve various parts of epics code base, and he never spared time or effort to help me with anything related to epics.

If you look at his contributions to various github repositories, you can see how much effort was he consistently putting into epics code over the years. One of the last things I remember him working on was adding access security for pvDatabase last spring, but he was active as long as he was able to code, until last October.

I believe Marty's work made all of our lives a little bit easier, and I will miss him greatly.

Hi,

I am sad to hear that. I remember my first meeting with Marty and Bob  in a café in Berlin in October 1993.The purpose was to explain me how to make an EPICS driver for a stepper motor.

His help was invaluable for the EPICS  first steps of the Saclay team.

When I met him during the EPICS collaboration meetings he was always very interested in what Saclay was doing and very kind to answer questions.

Forgive the non-technical email. Marty passed away recently. As Marty has provided immeasurable support to this community, this seems like the most appropriate way to let everyone know. He was dedicated to building a collaboration on a code base - before there were any text books or scholarly papers or even a name for it - that was open-source. He was a prolific coder, open to help and take help from others. He was meticulous in the production of robust code that many would depend on to operate their facilities. Making mistakes and fixing them is great for making heroes. Making code that everyone depends on and no one ever notices is the work of an outstanding engineer. Marty was an outstanding engineer and he was tireless in this pursuit. He laid waste to many a keyboard with his pounding style. His contributions are fundamental to all of our successes. Have a beer to our colleague, benefactor and friend ---
