We have used MVME-147's extensively at LBL, both before EPICS and now with
it. Depending on clock speed and memory size, they used to list for about
$4000 but Motorola had, until about a year ago, a 40% discount for education.
Since the MVME-167 is about the same price, and is superior in every way,
I would always recommend it, if indeed the -147 is still offered for sale.
(Perhaps I could give you deal on some slightly used ones, never driven
in the rain...)
