Ric,
CEBAF uses CAMAC extensively via a serial highway and a VME card to
drive it. A VME branch driver would also work with the existing software,
and could be plugged into a VXI crate with an adapter. So if you want
to preserve existing hardware, it is possible and supported by a major
EPICS site.
For new installations, AB is probably a better bet, but I have no first
hand experience. The AB stuff can probably stand a more hostile environment
and may have more robust interfaces to VME/VXI. CAMAC would have a speed
advantage, since the branch highway can do an I/O operation in 3 usec.
