Subject: Java dialog

During the EPICS user meeting (April 29-May 1), the people listed below
gathered after the session on Thursday to discuss common interests in
Java-based technologies and the role for Java within the EPICS community as
a future approach to building GUIs and applications. It was generally
agreed that the flexibility of the tools is attractive although the
performance today is insufficient to control something as large as an
accelerator.

The question arose as to what are the fundamental "objects" for an EPICS
system. There was no consensus or even strong opinions suggesting this
topic remains an area for investigation.

It was agreed that early work in this area (Cooper, Evans) would be posted
on the Web and advertised so that interested parties could learn from these
examples and use them as starting points.

I'm collecting names of folks who are especially interested in this Java
technology dialog. Potentially we could become a special interest group, so
let me know of your interests.

Ron.
