Job Description: The Bates Linear Accelerator Center is seeking an
Instrumentation Engineer to make a major contribution to the design and
implementation of various instrumentation systems to the Bates Control
System. The Bates Control System is implemented using the Experimental
Physics and Industrial Control System, EPICS.

The primary responsibilities include standardization of the
instrumentation hardware interface to VME modules, EPICS database design
for instrumentation systems, and automated test systems for VME hardware
modules. The control system uses Motorola VME processors running VxWorks
for the control system interface to the hardware and LINUX PC?s, Windows
NT, or UNIX workstations for control and monitoring the hardware
systems. Hardware responsibilities include writing system
specifications, selecting VME hardware, designing system interface
modules from hardware to VME, and testing and debugging the VME
hardware. Test software includes designing database?s and writing State
Notation Language software for automatic testing. Other software
efforts include Real Time Software feedback systems using PID loops or
other DSP routines written in C or C++. The engineer will be working
with other controls engineers, analog design engineers and Accelerator
Physicists in the design, debugging and operational phases of
implementation. Being on call and occasional shift work should be
expected.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or
other related discipline and 5 years experience working in a real time
controls environment. Familiarity with VXI VME hardware standards is
required. Expertise in VxWorks operating systems, C and UNIX and a
working knowledge of real time operating systems, required. A working
knowledge of the EPICS control system software desirable. The individual
for this position must have good written and verbal communications
skills, be able to work independently with a minimal amount of
supervision, and as a team member in the EE Group.
