Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System
We now have approval for new licenses for EPICS related software that is
distributed by Argonne National Laboratory. The following change applies
only to EPICS components distributed by APS.
It has long been our intention to make the EPICS software from LANL and
ANL available via an open source license. For EPICS Base this is not
currently possible because of US export control restrictions. Since the
old
EPICS agreement letter cannot be used for new sites, a new license
agreement has been developed for Base. All other EPICS components
distributed by ANL/APS (EPICS extensions and unbundled products) will be
made available via an open source license.
Web-pages describing the new licenses and the procedure for signing a new
license agreement for EPICS Base are now available on the EPICS website.
See
http://www.aps.anl.gov/epics/license/
for details.
Forthcoming EPICS Base versions 3.13.7 and 3.14.0beta2 and later will be
made available only to licensees who have signed the new EPICS Base
license. New versions of Base will not appear in the old EPICS software
distribution area, and old passwords will not work in the new Base
download area, so all sites will eventually have to sign a new license
agreement. Properly signed license applications will be accepted from any
individual, company, institution or other entity as long as he/she/it does
not appear on the US Bureau of Industry and Security's lists of denied
persons or entities.
Most EPICS extensions (medm, alh, etc.) and unbundled products
(allenBradley, MPF, etc.) from ANL/APS will be made available under the
new EPICS Open license.
Where anyone from outside ANL or LANL was the author of any significant
part of a EPICS product distributed by ANL, we cannot change the license
for that product until we have received a "Grant of License" from that
person's employer. We are still waiting for the Grant of License from a
few sites for EPICS Base.
