Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System

I'm sure someone from ASD Controls will chime in, but in case they don't...
ASD has a toolset which provides functionality something similar to 2 and
3. I've had to modify some of my code that runs on the ASD subnets to
provide this functionality as well. Basically, the ioc writes a couple of
files which are then parsed by a set of tools. They can find which crate
has a particular PV, all the PVs in an IOC, etc...
I, too, use the "ioc% dbl > file.txt" method
to generate files which can be later parsed.
This presumes that the IOC can be programmed to
do this (is this limited on a platform which can
run an IOC?) and is writing to a file system with
network access. Suppose, for example, that the IOC
is on a Win PC which does not export the directory,
this method fails. For the "dbl" request to work
on a system-wide basis, it needs to be a service
provided by the IOC and available without dependence
on the availability of a file system.
What about those systems where the developer has forgotten
to write this file? We need a way to get around
the usual human engineering which can break things.
