     I chose Red Hat Fedora Core 1 Linux.

     Why?

     The limitation that I faced with using Linux was SL-GMS.  At the 
time, I began testing (two years ago) EPICS, SL-GMS software and Linux, 
only Red Hat version 7.3 was supported by SL-GMS.  Today ???

   "Tested Sherrill-Lubinski Graphical Modeling System (SL-GMS)
software under Redhat Linux 7.3, 8.0, and 9.0 and Fedora Linux Core 1.
Fedora Core 1 is the best choice because a remote X-terminal screen
sizing problem has been fixed.  Only Fedora Linux Core 1 adjusts the
remote screen size to that of the remote X-terminal display.
   Fedora Core 1 and RedHat Linux 7.3 allow the SL-GMS control window
to be moved and resized while using the GNOME or KDE desktop environments.
   Redhat Linux 8.0 and 9.0 only allowed the SL-GMS window to be moved 
and resized under the KDE desktop environments.
   The new Fedora Linux, which replaces RedHat Linux will be supported.
RedHat Linux will not be supported anymore."

     Fedora Core 2 was released after, my development/testing work was 
terminated.  So, I have not tested the facility EPICS code under Core 2 
and newer releases.

     Fedora Core 1 represents the last of the 2.4.x kernel.
     Fedora Core 2 represents the first of the 2.6.x kernel.
     Usually the last of a series is the best OS while the first of a 
series has the most problems.
