At LANSCE, we have run two VSD 2992 serial highway drivers from the same crate without undo grief.  We were only using a single processor, however (an MVME 167) and the two highways (which were both pretty heavily loaded) were a bit of a strain on the CPU, so we eventually moved the second highway to its own crate.

The EPICS Camac driver still uses "module_types.h", which is a bit anachronistic, but does have the advantage that all you have to do is set the two modules to different addresses (within the range specified by "module_types.h") and the software will automatically recognize both branches.
