I find it a bit shame that the aai and aao are not actively supported. 
After all, they would provide
the nice features of ai and ao (conversions, limits, etc) for arrays. 
This is something that one alway
has to hand-craft to the application when using the waveform record. 
And, the waveform
record is thought to be used as an input, although it can be tweaked to 
be used as an output, too.

This is my preference, too, and I think this way one can really use the 
power of EPICS. But I know there
are lots of people who prefer sequencers or other tools. I just could 
not resist to comment on this ;-)
