Aha ... and whoops: can you check that select.POLLNVAL is 0x20, please?  I'm pretty sure it is, which I'll assume for the rest of this mail.

Oh dear, oh dear.  This is telling me that there is no stdin.

Are you running this program interactively?  The code that's failing is part of the readline hook, used to ensure that the cothread scheduler carries on working even while you're typing into the interpreter -- but it assumes that stdin is available.

But you must be running interactively, as otherwise the readline hook wouldn't be being called.

I'm confused and bemused.  Where the devil has our input got to?  Surely there can't be something peculiar about how OSX handles stdin -- I'm sure that file handle 0 is always supposed to be used for stdin, but that event number is telling us that file handle 0 is not valid for select.

Any OSX experts got any ideas here?  I'm stumped for the moment (but I'll try and think about it).
