The broadcast is used to send a message to find the PV.  The IOC with the PV then sends a directed (non-broadcast) respond to the client, and they communicate by normal TCP.  So the client then knows the IP address of the IOC.  But to make nice human-readable output it tries to also get the IP name of the IOC, so it looks for a DNS server.

So can just put an entry in your /etc/hosts file if no DNS server is available.

Hi, Mark.  But given that it's a broadcast address, it should never
resolve to any single name.  Does this mean that this is a general
problem with using a broadcast address as EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST on the
client side?
