Hello Kay,

We are using CSS from SNS 3.2.16 source snapshot with BEAST alarm handler included.
The menu item "Alarm Item Configuration" contains a block for "Automated
Actions" on the bottom. Do you know if this BEAST feature is operational in CSS 3.2.16 or in the current version of SNS CSS ? If it is, is there a description of how to set up the
automated actions, we are interested in e-mails?

Thanks,
    Hovanes Egiyan

Hi:

The DESY alarm messaging system supports emails.

For the BEAST, collaborators at ITER are planning to implement 'automated actions', where one action (actually the one to be implemented first) could be "send email". But at this time that's not done.

Thanks,
Kay

Subject: Alarm annunciation via email in CSS BEAST

Hi,

The last couple of weeks we've been experimenting with CSS BEAST as part of our evaluation of BEAST as a replacement of ALH for the ASKAP telescope. We've managed to create our own product following the guidelines in the CSS book. Our next stage of the evaluation (before we start migrating some of our current operator displays) is to develop a few plug-ins to suit our specific needs and deploy a CSS prototype that includes BEAST into the real system so we can capture some feedback from our users (specially in the current stage of verification and commissioning).

One of the features we need is to be able to annunciate alarms via email and SMS. I could not find any plug-in that implements a "JMS (BEAST) to Email" style of notification. The proposed operation model of our telescope will not have an operator in the control room all the time (24/7), therefore the system must notify the operator (and other interested users) via other means besides voice like email or SMS. Has anyone implemented such a plug-in or perhaps there is one in source forge but I missed it?

I know some of the drawbacks of using emails as alarm notification (email flooding) and I would like to ask the community if anyone has good (or bad) experience using email as alarm notification.

Also has anyone experimented with developing iPhone or Android app and using their notification service? Is it possible (and how hard might be) to listen to JMS *_TALK messages or other method and send it to "smart phones"?

Thanks,
   Juan.
