I think it's because there have been more than 10 tags created since the
3.15.5 release, and by default git doesn't consider enough candidates to
find the right one:
> tux% git branch
> * 3.15
> tux% git describe --always --long --tags
> R3.14.12.7-14467-gc18b6f2
> tux% git describe --always --long --tags --candidates=20
> R3.15.5-180-gc18b6f2
