We use Apache in front of the appliance cluster; open up the /retrieval/ namespace and protect the /mgmt/ namespace. For example, using something like
<Location /mgmt/>
.....
Require valid-user
</Location>
In some installations, we also integrate Apache authentication with our site authentication.
