O.K., you gurus of the EPICS ether (I already miss Marty!), got a question for you.
Is it possible from with a device driver that before iocInit (or during some part of it) to programmatically build a database record for use in EPICS?
For instance, I’d like my device driver to have a few records available over CA regarding its performance and statistics. I know I can create a AI for instance, and then a dedicated DB that references that tag (along with a few others…), but it just seemed a more definite direction if I could have the driver actually programmatically build and install the appropriate entries.
How would your driver compute the record names?
I often have record for driver/device "health" information, including
performance counters and stats. I usually either require a separate
.db template to be loaded (with names provided), or append these with
the other device information (duplicated if need be).
You might also make sure of the fact that one .db file can include
another.

nI know – I know – I’m crazy, but just trying to do thing “… down a different path”.
