I'm pretty sure this is a line-ending problem; your cygwin is probably 
set up to expect Unix line-endings (\n => 0x0a), but the file you're 
giving it has DOS line-endings (\n => 0x0d, 0x0a).  This probably 
explains why the error message below doesn't make very much sense:

There are various ways to solve it - changing cygwin to use the DOS 
line-ending conventions, or change the source file to use the Unix 
conventions.  If you used winzip to untar the asyn distribution that 
might explain how this happened, because it would have put the DOS 
line-endings in.

I think we tried to fix this kind of problem in some later versions, but 
I don't know that we solved all of the possible locations.
