I am deeply saddened by the news of Marty’s passing.
Marty to me is like a great Kung Fu master in EPICS world. I was super lucky, sent to APS, Argonne National Laboratory twice working next to his office for few weeks. I had the opportunity to learn EPICS from
him, a world EPICS master.
The first time I worked with him was in early 1990s; the mission was to port EPICS base to HP Unix OS and EPICS ADE for CEBAF project and the 2nd time was in early 2000s from BNL to APS; mission was to learn his newly developed Asyn Device Support using for
SNS control system project.
Marty was not only an expert in EPICS software, but he is also a great teacher and mentor. His great influence on me goes beyond being a profession in Accelerator Control Software field. His healthy lifestyle and hard work ethic also set an example for me.
I missed time with him: apart from work, I often walk with him to Cafeteria at 11am, not with a shortcut path, but a long one for exercise. He usually started work before 7am, and around 3pm,
he printed out few pages of code to bring home to read.
Marty, you will be so missed!
