Chapter 6 Monitors

4. Meters

Meters have all the basic properties of monitors, but no properties unique to themselves.

A meter represents the value that it monitors with a needle that varies according to the value of the channel that it's monitoring.

The 'label type' property of the meter has the same four settings as bars and indicators: (1)none, (2)outline, (3)limits, and (4) channel. The none setting displays the meter's pointer. The outline setting displays the pointer and the gauge within which the pointer moves. The limits setting displays the pointer, the gauge, and the high and low display limits, while the channel setting displays the pointer, the gauge, the display limits, and the name of the channel that the meter is monitoring. Figure 6-11 shows the run-time appearance for each of these four settings.

Label Type Property for Meters.

The high and low display limit properties work the same as for bars and indicators. You can enter in values in these properties, in which case the display limits become these values. Or if both values are zero, then the high and low display limits for the channel being monitored will be retrieved from the database. Be aware that some of these values may be too long for DM to display, in which case DM will display an error message when the 'label type' property is set to limits or channel, as these settings use the display limits.

One thing to note about the display limits: (1) once you change either of the display limit properties to some value other than zero, the value for the other display limit, even though it may be zero, is no longer retrieved from the database.

The only other thing you must be aware of when configuring meters is that meters are always situated horizontally. There is no property by which you can change this. Also, since the meter's gauge is a semi-circle, you must configure meters to have a greater height than other horizontally situated objects. If you don't allow enough height you may end up with some "squashed" meters that an operator may not be able to make heads or tails of. The minimum value for a meter's vertical size is about 40.
