I have a vague recollection that some labs have used a terminal server to record the boot messages generated by an IOC as it boots. Is there some standard way for doing this, or is it completely dependent on the choice of server? I would like to hear what choices other EPICS sites have made.
UNICAT uses a network serial port hub to connect to the VxWorks console port. The serial port is connected to a Linux device port, such as /dev/ttySI0. That port can be opened for direct 2-way connection with the VME for configuration. Alternatively, the text stream on the serial port can be time-stamped and logged by a Tcl/Expect script. This leaves any console output from the VME in a permanent archive for later examination.
