Job Description:
Basic Purpose
Support and upgrade existing PC-based applications for control and
data acquisition of APS related equipment. Design, document, implement,
and support new applications per the requirements of physicists,
engineers, and other APS staff. A typical application will require
advanced motor control algorithms, data acquisition from several
scientific instruments, moderately complex analysis of data, and a user
friendly presentation of the results in a GUI environment.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Masters Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronic
Engineering or the equivalent combination of education, experience and
specific training. Sufficient professional experience to work
independently on a day-to-day basis. Experience in developing machine
control, monitoring, and data acquisition applications on a PC/Windows
platform using Visual Basic, C, and/or C++ is required. Experience with
stepper motors, encoders, data acquisition devices, and standard digital
interfaces, buses, and protocols (PCI, VME, GPIB, RS232) is highly
desirable. Experience with Unix, Linux, vxWorks, EPICS, and embedded
system technology (DSPs and/or microcontrollers) is desirable.
Demonstrated ability to successfully complete significant programming
efforts in a timely manner. Must communicate and work effectively with
other staff to determine project requirements and appropriate
implementation. Must be available for off-hours on-call response to
support 24-hour operation. Ph.D. and 0-1 year experience/equivalent
Master's Degree and 2-3 years of experience/equivalent Bachelor's Degree
and 6-8 years experience/equivalent
