Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System
At the SLS we're using the alarmhandlers feature to launch commands on
a change in the severity state of an alarm group.
This can be used for example:
* to play dedicated alarm sounds on loudspeakers (as loud as you like :-)
* to send SMS messages to an operator mobile in case of new alarms
(The operator has to arm the mechanism to get the next alarm only)
* to write the alarm severity of an alarm group to a channel
The latter is at the moment used for alarm overview panels,
but we'll move to dedicated EPICS databases calculating sum-alarms
for those panels, to avoid unnessesary interdependencies in our high
level application (E.g. what happens if two alarmhandlers are running with
slightly different configurations?)

I prefer the most unjust peace to the most righteous war.
