You can also write a PV to an output that would drive a buzzer, bell,
horn, siren, lights, etc. You could construct an indicator panel with
anything from LEDs to strobe lights and sirens, if you wanted to.

Better yet, let the ioc handle it directly with a clever database
instead of going through ALH. That way you wouldn't have to worry about
ALH being closed and your alarms being disabled. 
 
We used to have scan-converter boxes made by ADDS (about 100 years ago).
We would write to them via the serial ports on an ioc and they'd put
text out in NTSC video. They could only do text, but they could make it
flash for alarms. If you want to go with the TVs, I'd suppose someone
makes the modern equivalent of these boxes.
