Tech-talk Mailing List

The main EPICS mailing list is called Tech-talk, and is used for technical discussions, questions and announcements. See below for subscription instructions. We also have other more specialized mailing lists for use by developers of the EPICS core software, users of Qt, and for hardware collaborations.

The Tech-talk list accepts posts from subscribers; messages from an email address that is not subscribed to the list are still able to post but these messages will be delayed pending moderator approval, and if judged to be Spam may be discarded without notice. Members of the EPICS community who wish to be exempted from the moderation requirement without subscribing can request this by emailing the list administrator.

When asking for help to solve problems, please copy & paste any warnings or error messages as text from the original and include some context from above the error message if appropriate; don't post screen-shots as image files are much larger than the text they contain (we do limit the size of messages that can be sent to the list) and screen-shots don't permit anyone answering to easily quote from parts of your message.

Please don't attach tarfiles or zipfiles or directly attach any files with the extension .cmd, such as IOC startup scripts files st.cmd. A .cmd extension is used on Microsoft Windows for a kind of command script. Many spam filters nowadays search through tarballs and zipfiles and will either reject such messages or remove the file from it, but in either case they result in many rejection messages coming in to the list manager.

List Archives

Messages sent to the list are archived annually.

The Tech-talk archives are searchable. The archive search index is updated overnight, so today's messages won't appear in any search results. Give a space- or comma-separated list of words to search for. Only whole words will be matched. Check the box to return a list of messages containing any of the search words, othewise only messages containing all the words will be returned.

Subscribing to Tech-talk

There are two ways to read to Tech-talk messages:

RSS Subscription

You can be notified about the arrival of new messages at the list archive without having to subscribe, using one of our two RSS feeds.

Visiting those links in a regular web browser won't show anything particularly useful; if you aren't familiar with RSS read this. I use and recommend Feedly for reading RSS feeds (it also has apps for both Android and iOS), but there are other readers available, built into web browsers, as stand-alone programs or apps, or purely online.

Note that the full text feed is new and may break in some circumstances, but it seems to work pretty well.

All EPICS mailing lists are moderated for messages sent by non-members, so if you haven't subscribed using the Mailman interface your messages will be held for approval before being circulated. If you prefer to use the RSS interface to read messages but want to avoid the moderation delay, you can subscribe to the emails but configure Mailman to not actually send you any messages.

Email Subscription

To have Tech-talk messages forwarded to your email inbox, visit the mailman information page for the Tech-talk list and fill in the subscription form there. You can also subscribe via email; send a message to [email protected] that contains just the work "help" in either the subject or message body for further instructions.

To send a message to a list

In general you should subscribe if you intend to send messages to this list (note that you can subscribe but turn message delivery off if you normally read Tech-talk through the RSS feed). If you aren't subscribed, your message will have to be approved by a list moderator, which will delay its delivery. However it should eventually get through (unless it looks like spam), so a subscription is not essential.

Address messages to [email protected], for example:

Subject:
From:
To:
Please use a relevent subject line
[email protected]
[email protected]

Your message...

Some broken mail programs may try to send messages to the bounce-address [email protected] which is the envelope return address used for all outgoing messages and is only supposed to receive information about messages that can't be delivered. If you do not correct this address before sending, your messages will be delayed as they will have to be forwared by the list owner.
