A GUI "Open" opens up, but I can not select any .dbd files (can not browse directories). If "Open" window is moved, after "Files of Type:" is selected, the "Files of Types:" window does not move with "Open" wondow, but stays in old position.

Check your version of java. On fc6 I had to get a JRE from Sun to get vdct to work. fedora8 ships a java 'icedtea' that worked without problem
