FYI, if I create stream.dbd to look like yours and continue make I
encounter the same problem when it gets around to making target
streamReferences which has similar syntax.

What about your version of make -- what implementation and version are
you using?

I am using make from GnuWin32, version is 3.81

http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages.html

This definitely appears like a make problem to me - but not sure what other version to try.

Mark Rivers is using a version from cygwin - I might try that tomorrow - other suggestions?
