Hmm…posting to tech talk seems to have triggered my brain to provide a workaround.
I changed the space on all the substitution 'file' lines to a newline so that lines like
file irmPerADC.template {
became
file irmPerADC.template
{
And now things seem to work.
However:
1) This wasn't necessary before
and
2) The Application Developer's Guide examples show the left curly bracket on the 'file' line as I had in my original version.
