You are really talking about hardware in the loop (HIL) test equipment. DSpace are a significant player in this field. I believe that National Instruments are also active. I used DSpace many years ago in the automotive industry. The other option is to build your own bespoke system.

 

At Diamond we started looking at HIL testing mainly for testing drivers against hardware using Hudson. We also planned to use it to test suppliers firmware changes. We basically had two opposing IOCs simulating inputs/outputs. We got as far as being able to simulate motion for an OMS VME-58 card. But that’s as far as it went as we did not have the effort available to develop the system further.

 

There is a significant overhead in maintaining HIL systems and ensuring that the model really represents the real system. Small errors in estimating the real system’s behaviour can cause major problems down the line.

Does anybody in the community use any sort of "hardware simulator" - an I/O device that can be easily configured to substitute a missing apparatus in order to test DAQ units or the whole control system itself? Wanted to hear you thoughts/experiences/desires/etc.
