Control System Software Architect
The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Control System Software Architect.
Description of directorate/division
The Integrated Control System division is responsible for the design,
construction, commissioning and operation of control systems for the ESS facility including Accelerator, Target, Neutron Scattering Instruments and Conventional Facilities. Our

Description of main responsibilities
- Lead the Configuration Data Management work unit. This work unit consists of five databases and services to keeping track of the virtual and physical parts of the control system, accelerator, target, conventional facilities, and neutron instruments.
- Provide the architecture for control system services (logging, archiving, alarms etc.)
- Develop software according to ICS standards and technology choices (Java, Glassfish, Postgres, EPICS)
- Contribute to the tools and processes to create a robust and productive development environment
- Write and maintain quality documents for requirements, design, test plans, and test reports
- Mentor junior developers and communicate with the users on control system use and issues.
- Champion ICS standards for software development
- Integrate and contribute to existing software from controls software collaborations (DISCS, EPICS, ITER)
- Working hours are standard office hours, but occasionally you will need to be flexible and work evenings due to meeting arrangements and hard workload.
Qualifications
- Previous experience from a similar role
- 3 years experience in software development for accelerator controls
- 7 years experience software development in Java, C, C++, Python
- Previous experience in large database design and maintenance using MySQL/Postgres
- Previous experience with EPICS and Control System Studio
- Previous experience in service-oriented software architecture
- Previous experience with rest-full interfaces
- Previous experience in Control System Services such as logging, archiving, and alarms
- Previous experience setting up a development environment
- Previous experience in agile methodology using JIRA
- Experience of working in an international environment
- Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
