AFIAK “ID?” is not a valid SCPI command.  Do you mean”IDN?”  — perhaps this is just a typo in your message here, though.
Are you sure that you have the correct terminators specified?

It appears that the DMM is receiving commands which I send.
"BEEP" makes the DMM beep.  If I send an invalid command I can
read the error message through its front panel.
However, valid commands which should send a reply (eg. "ID?") don't
trigger an error, but also timeout without sending back any reply string.
