Have you enabled asynTraceIODriver in the VXI11 driver to see if there is any reply? Could it be a terminator problem, though GPIB does not normally use terminators.

"ID?" isn't a typo. The 3458A DMM doesn't quite follow the usual conventions.
I have tried "*IDN?", which the device tells me (via its front panel) is an error.
