Inbound connections on eth1 were blocked and I had eth0 restricted to SSH/tcp while I was setting up the machine. Normally I allow all traffic from the local subnet. Opening eth0 (or eth1) fixes the problem. If I open both, then I need to set EPICS_CA_AUTO_ADDR_LIST=NO and use EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST. I still don't understand why it didn't work from the local host. iptables accepts all traffic from the loopback. Why doesn't that work for CA ? - brian
BTW: We use iptables to block the second network port for CA instead of tweaking EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST.
