I think it you're on the right track here.
A symlink has permissions of its own, which
may differ from the file/directory which the
link is targeting. eg.
> $ ls -ld *dir
> lrwxrwxrwx 1 mdavidsaver mdavidsaver 7 Jul 26 19:53 aliasdir -> testdir
> dr-xr-xr-x 2 mdavidsaver mdavidsaver 4.0K Jul 26 19:52 testdir
> $ touch aliasdir/test
> touch: cannot touch 'aliasdir/test': Permission denied
