What's your motivation to go from Trusty to Xenial? Do you intend to drop support for gcc 4.x?
Note: You can always install newer gcc versions on Travis' Trusty VMs [1], but (AFAIK) there's no documented safe way to downgrade gcc on Xenial.

The "sudo: false" setting in a .travis.yml file now has no effect and
should be removed; all Travis builds since December 7th have taken place
in a VM environment.
I would play around with these but I suspect Ralph would prefer that I
work on the 7.0.2 final release in time for his up-coming deadline, so
someone else could try out making these changes if they feel so inclined
and know how to use Travis...
