I like using clear names to distinguish stuff.
"tryjoin" (that Michael found to be a pthread extension) is a good example.
// ...
ret = t1.tryJoin(timeout);
// read something modified by t1
makes it pretty obvious that you should check the returned status before trying to read stuff that t1 should have modified.
