I agree with Kay that a Git tree-ish is very useful. At FRIB we already
have the SHA1 available as part of the version number of our Debian
packages and we are using it a lot. Making this available to all EPICS
users makes sense.

I'm wondering if it would make sense to combine the two lines or even to
get rid of them altogether (e.g. replace them by a "version" command on
the IOC shell). I hate the fact that IOCs tend to be so chatty during
start...
