Wouldn’t it be easier to just do a ‘make -C iocBoot clean’ before you
do the ‘git pull’?
I'm a bit reluctant to run make clean if not needed since this wipes out
files in the $(TOP)/bin $(TOP)/db and $(TOP)/lib folders. What if the
build fails and my IOC crashes before the IOC engineer has resolved the
problem? I have to admit that this is kind of a weak argument but just
running "make" seems to be the safest approach until we can transition
to containers…

The ‘make -C <directory> clean’ option does a clean in iocBoot and its subdirectories only. If you know which IOC has been deleted you could do ‘make -C <iocBoot/iocxxx clean’ which would only clean up that directory and wouldn’t affect any other IOCs. As Michael just posted, I didn’t say ‘make distclean’, and even doing a ‘make clean’ from the top wouldn’t delete your install directories (bin, lib, did, db etc.) although it does remove generated files from the iocBoot directories; that’s inconsistent though and we should probably fix it.

Complexity comes for free, simplicity you have to work for.
