Are there any plans to increase the current 28 character limit on
record names?
Our rational for asking is this: the Gemini control system has four
major components -
1) TCS (Telescope Control System) - beam control
2) ICS (Instrument Control System) - detector control
3) DHS (Data Handling (and Reduction) System) - data management
4) OCS (Observatory Control System) - highlevel sequencing, preprogrammed
observing management.
Of these the TCS and ICS are clearly IOC-based. The issue here is that the OCS
lives in a world of high-level configurations whose directives are phrased in
fairly human readable terms and that we would like to have all four systems
use a common name-space. We realize that it is possible to set up a translation
between the name-space used by the OCS and that used by the IOC-based systems
but would prefer a consistent naming convention - and not have to worry about
record name lengths!
As a general issue on system architecture - I would guess that most
experimental physics control systems would use a similar system breakdown -
except in more 'engineering mode' cases where the OCS would be absent.
Does anyone else use the equivalent of the OCS?
