Subject: A channel access problem probably due to something else.

As you may recall, some time back we wrote device support and a driver
which allows channel access to the "Historical (Intel) ALS Database"
via a Bit3 vme/multibus-I interface.

Up until this point all of the records have used periodic processing
(1 sec or sometimes 10 sec update rate), and that seems to work fine.
We're trying to move beyond this to making some of these records "process
passive", triggered by the processing of other records, sometimes in a
different IOC.

I made a mockup that worked using soft records to get the links set
up properly, but things aren't going well in the real world.

It appears that this (always?) wedges the IOC which contains the Bit3
interface. We're talking serious wedge here - even the console shell
is frozen. It seems obvious that we've overlooked something in our
device and/or driver support. I've been pouring over the IOC Record
Reference Manual and the IOC Application Developers Guide, but so far
I remain clueless.

These records are all processed synchronously, so it appears that I
don't need to mess with PACT. Is this a reasonable assumption?

Any pointers/suggestions/wild guesses will be greatly appreciated.
