I should have been more specific.
Even though a date format such as -D "3/31/92 10:00:07 MST"
is acceptable to CVS, using the tags of specific files is the better
choice. But when dealing with the files individually, there is no
single tag applicable to all files. This is because checked out source
files are almost always in-between revisions (unless you specify a
release tag when checking out the source).
Of course, another alternative is that you can tag the source files
yourself after checking them out, write down that tagname and use it
later when merging back the source.
The fact is that a specific date/time tags are equivalent to release
tag names, with the additional benefit that they also can apply between
EPICS revisions.
