README file for EPICS arrIDL extension
--------------------------------------

This is arrIDL_0p0 (version 0, patch level 0), released on 22-Sep-95.

The arrIDL extension consists of IDL procedures and shareable library
which allow EPICS archiver files to be read into IDL variables for
display using IDL tools, and reported as ASCII files for analysis
using spread-sheets or user-written programs.

The extraction facilities are modeled on those provided by Carl Timmer's
arrtk extension. This suffered from major performance problems owing to
the use of Tcl lists for everything. Only very basic timing tests have
been performed with arrIDL, but it read a 1200 sample file (2 channels)
in two seconds. This time includes conversion of all time stamps to ASCII.

Future versions of arrIDL may provide an IDL widget GUI and some tools for
display of multiple EPICS PVs. The display routine used in the stripIDL
extension may be used here.
