Duke Free-Electron Laser Laboratory (DFELL) Technical Staff Positions
Subject to approval by Duke University, DFELL anticipates searching for
research scientists, engineers and technical staff to support several light
sources as well as a broad users community. Active areas of research at
DFELL include FEL physics, nuclear physics, materials science, and
biological and biomedical sciences. The laboratory is centrally located on
the Duke campus in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina.
For all positions, ability to work as a member of a team is essential.
Open positions include:
Real-time control systems engineer or physicist: The laboratory has been
developing for some time accelerator control systems using Experimental
Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS). Several years experience in
real-time control and data acquisition systems is preferred. Expertise in
EPICS, UNIX, C++, familiarity with Solaris and/or LINUX, X-windows, VxWorks
and/or LabView, as well as standard digital interface protocols (VME,
CAMAC, GPIB, and RS232) is desirable.
Research and Development Engineer or Research Scientist: Develop beam
diagnostics and feedback for accelerators and FELs. Prior experience with
e-beam diagnostics and accelerators is preferred.
Vacuum Technician: Required to quality check, clean and assemble
precision-machined vacuum chamber parts. Experience and skill in the use
of precision measuring tools such as micrometers, height gauges and dial
indicators is essential. Must be able to work in a clean room environment
and understand the fundamental concepts of vacuum technology.
Electronics Technician: Construct and maintain pulse power systems with
voltages up to 300 kV and RF power to 30MW. Experience with high power
pulsed RF equipment such as radar systems is required. Familiarity with
microwave generation and measurement techniques at frequencies up to 3 GHz
is desirable.
Mechanical Technician: Support development and maintenance of the FEL
light sources and associated experiments. Responsibilities will at
different times include: maintaining and troubleshooting various
mechanical systems; performing quality control checks on components;
assembling new systems; welding; machining; providing technical and manual
assistance to students, staff and visiting scientists. Experience with
plumbing, vacuum, compressed air, and HVAC is desirable.
Interviews will begin on August 1, 1999 and continue until the positions
