Dave,
It is not difficult to make connections to and retrieve initial values from EPICS
at a rate of several hundred per second. Once connections are made, thousands
of value changes per second can be handled, although a graphics program can
not, of course, paint that many. If initial connection time is important (to launch
a complex screen), you may want to adjust the priority of the IOC task which
handles name resolution. Jefferson Lab runs in this mode so that moderately
loaded IOC's respond quickly enough to new channel connections from MEDM.
