I have been looking at ImageJ as an open source image analysis package. One of the ImageJ plugins is micro-manager. “μManager is an Open Source software package for imaging and control of automated microscopes on multiple platforms (Windows, Mac and Linux). “ http://micro-manager.org/ Since we use EPICS I haven’t looked at this more than noting that it can be called by custom code and supports a number of CCD type cameras, but it might be worth looking at.
