Channel Access limits strings to 40 characters. So you will only be able
to set/read your long strings locally on the IOC, not across the network.

What might be a disadvantage is that you have to take care of your
customization whenever you try your database with other EPICS versions
(e.g. upgrade) and therefore your database would have a problem to work
with a normal ("standard") EPICS distribution.

Is it ok to break 40 chars limit in CALC field( or another text fields
like DESC) ?
I've changed this limit to 200 in calcoutRecord.dbd, db_access.c and
epicsTypes.h (MAX_STRING_SIZE define) and it works ok
