Thanks Matthieu. This was exactly the issue. It looks like the patch
only got accepted upstream a few months ago. I had xserver-xorg version
1:7.5+5ubuntu1. With some trepidation, I dist-upgraded my entire system
to Ubuntu 10.10. Now with xorg version 1:7.5+6ubuntu3, and it works
fine.
